Search term tips: Subject headings

What are some words or phrases to use when looking for a book or resource on stress management in a library catalog? There are many Library of Congress subject headings that will be tied to the books you want:

Stress (Psychology)

Stress in adolescence

Stress management

Stress management--21st century

Stress management for children

Stress management for teenagers

Stress management--handbooks, manuals, etc.

Stress management--popular works

Books like Pressure: True Stories by Teens About Stress, edited by Al Desetta, are under the subject headings "Stress in adolescence -- Juvenile literature," "Stress management for teenagers -- Juvenile literature," "Stress (Psychology)," and "Stress management," as an example.

It can also be useful to search your catalog with keywords related to the specific situation you are in that is causing stress, and refine your search by "children's" or "teen" works, format such as print or audiobook, etc. I thought back to my stress in school and typed in "judgment" to my local public library's catalog, then refined it by clicking on "children's" and I found the book on CD Every Single Second by Tricia Springstubb, which has the subject headings "Friendship -- Fiction," "Families -- Fiction, "Communities -- Fiction," "Time -- Fiction," and "Coming of age -- Fiction" but goes over a story of a girl dealing with judgment from her community or from her friends.

Searching for synonyms of topics you are stressed about and want to find resources for can help: for instance, if you have stress related to dealing with death, you can look for works under the Library of Congress subject heading "teenagers and death" or "grief in adolescence -- fiction," which will help you find books on that experience. However, you can also search a catalog for keywords like "grief," "loss," or "funeral." Searching for "funeral" and "teen" in my local library database helped me find The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds.
