Good videos and audiobooks

When you are stressed, you can always check out some of your favorite movies from the library, or look into movies that can be calming to watch or that deal with stressful situations but are resolved well. Examples of good movies could be Spirited Away, Inside Out, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Pride and Prejudice, Pleasantville, Finding Neverland, Big Hero 6, or Matilda.

Laughter releases stress! Try some of the funniest movies if you need a break:

Another idea is to look for audiobooks and listen to them to help your mind relax. I personally used Jim Dale’s readings of the Harry Potter series to de-stress when I was in middle school and can still use it occasionally to wind down before sleep. Your local library will have Audiobooks or Playaways and some libraries have eAudiobooks that can be checked out online. YALSA (the Young Adult Library Services Association) puts out a list of Amazing Audiobooks for Young Adults every year and those lists can be great to choose from if you want a suggestion of good audiobooks –look at the selections here: http://www.ala.org/yalsa/audiobooks/. Using the Akron-Summit County Public Library as an example, I could search the catalog for books I want to listen to, such as I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, and can refine the results by Playaway or Book on CD on the left side panel of “Refine By:” options. My public library has two Playaways and three copies of the book on CD version.

Finally, you can search the Internet for videos to watch when you are stressed. If you want to watch something inspirational, TEDx talks have become popular, and you can search the database of all videos here: https://www.ted.com/talks. You can search for topics like “stress” or any other word related to what is going on in your life. If you have 8 minutes, this talk by Jessica Amos is another option of something to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYCPsPBMo8U.
